Barry Newis
(View BIOGRAPHY)
Barry Newis, born in 1939, studied at Bromley College of Art in the late 1950’s where he met and was taught by Frank Auerbach. Newis follows in the British tradition of impasto painting, exemplified by artists such as Bomberg, Kossoff and Auerbach. His use of paint however is his own, working three-dimensionally, adding or removing layers of paint to imbue the landscape with a tangible sense of physical structure. Rapid strokes of dripping paint in Angles Way for example vividly suggest the intensity of the wind across the landscape. Or in Snowscape - Field Harleston the changing light across the melting snow is captured in a moment. But these views are not just fragments, Newis somehow manages to establish the longevity and solidity of his subject matter, showing an intimate knowledge of the land. The artist’s vigour and draughtsmanship can also be seen in his remarkable drawings. Rapid charcoal strokes are vigorously counterpointed by the use of an eraser to take away from the surface, conveying permanence to a momentary scene.
