Exhibitions Gallery - Modern British Art 2012
12 June - 1 September
It is fourteen years since we began the annual series of Modern British exhibitions at the gallery, and during that time we have been fortunate enough to handle a remarkable collection of paintings and sculpture. We have also mounted a series of major retrospective exhibitions, including Wadsworth, Vaughan and Kinley, not to mention our re-creation of the pivotal 1955 show of British abstraction and a survey of British constructive art.
We have always had a particular interest in sculpture and for this exhibition we will have fine works by Armitage, Chadwick, Frink and Moore.
Interest in Peter Kinley continues to be strong and we have included an early impasto painting of 1961, unseen for decades and another of 1966 showing Kinley’s transition to thinner, flatter, more simplified figure painting of the later 1960s and beyond.
Following our successful Keith Vaughan exhibition of works on paper we will include gouaches and oils not in that exhibition. There will also be fine works by Prunella Clough, John Craxton, Paul Feiler, Patrick Heron, Peter Lanyon and Ben Nicholson.
We hope you get the chance to see this fine collection either at the gallery or at Masterpiece London.

Maquette Vertical Screen Form by Robert Adams, 1964 Steel Stamped & dated on base
The 1960s was a
productive decade for
Adams who between
working for three
important exhibitions at
Gimpel Fils executed
several important
architectural
commissions. Each was
designed specifically for
the site and he would
always work closely with
the architect. In 1964 he
was commissioned to
make a 10 feet high open
screen by the architect
Dennis Lennon, to flank
the staircase of a new
glass showroom for
Sekers Fabrics, in
London. Alistair Grieve
informs us that the
screen, ‘was composed of
ranks of vertical bronzed-
steel tubes and slats,
stacked in horizontal
layers, varied by
occasional slants,
disjunctions and breaks
in the spacing.1 The main
ground-floor showroom
could be viewed through
it. Five small maquettes
were made which relate
to this commission and
there is at least one
lithograph of a similar
composition’. The
maquettes including this
example are recorded by
Grieve (Nos 466-470).
