This is John Blackburn’s fifth exhibition at Osborne Samuel, and is the fourth in what has been a busy year for the artist. The first was at Artis Gallery, Auckland, New Zealand in February, followed by his critically and commercially successful show at The Open Eye Gallery, Edinburgh in April and then in May by an exhibition curated by the renowned collector Ronnie Duncan at his Barn Gallery in Yorkshire. In 1948 the great French photographer Robert Doisneau set up his Rolleiflex camera in the Galerie Romi in Paris, hidden behind an antique chair, to capture the reactions of passers-by to a strategically placed painting of a nude in the window - salacious by the standards of the time. Capturing a variety of emotions from shock and discomfort, to intrigue and amusement – Doisneau’s witty portrayal of the Parisian voyeur, in the ultimate ‘candid camera’, was an assignment for Life Magazine and published in the same year.

We are delighted to be participating once again at the London Art Fair at the Business Design Centre in Islington. As many of you will know this fair begins the new art fair season in mid-January each year with an eclectic mix of Modern British and contemporary art and photography. This year we will exhibit a mixture of Modern British works by Robert Adams, Reg Butler, Lynn Chadwick, Prunella Clough, Roger Hilton, Henry Moore, Paul Mount and Keith Vaughan alongside contemporary works by Brendan Burns, Lucian Freud, Sean Henry and Grayson Perry.
