Blair Hughes-Stanton   1902-1981

Painter and wood engraver, of figures, imaginative subjects and of semi abstract compositions. He studied at the Byam Shaw School 1919-21, the RA Schools, and under Leon Underwood, who had a school in Hammersmith, 1921-4. The son of Sir Herbert Hughes-Stanton, he married fellow artist Gertrude Hermes in 1926 after illustrating T.E. Lawrence's The Seven Pillars of Wisdom' and became best known as a designer, illustrator and producer of fine books, for the Golden Cockerel and Cresset presses, for the Gregynog Press, 1930-33, and for his own Gemini Press, 1933-36. He was seriously wounded as a POW during the Second World War.
