British Born in Liverpool, and trained at Liverpool College of Art 1959-61, and at the Slade School 1961-4, he has been primarily a sculptor, but makes important reliefs and drawings of a painterly character as well as sculptural constructions in wood and metal that employ oil paint. Since 1966 he has taught at Goldsmiths' College. His first one-man show was at the Bear Lane Gallery in Oxford in 1964; in 1978 he exhibited at Annely Juda and today is represented by Juda Rowan. He won an award in the Littlewoods Sculptural Design Competition in 1964, and Arts Council Major Awards in 1975, 1977 and 1980. His work has represented British art in many exhibitions abroad. Typically it establishes the spatial implications of the presence of a human figure, which is often only vestigially represented by marks or drawing in the context of an extensive setting.
