Belgian Belgian Painter, born in Liege. Corneille is of Dutch descent. Studied drawing at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and later taught himself to paint. Founder member of the Dutch Experimental Group and later the Cobra group. He studied graphic techniques with Hayter in 1953 at Atalier 17 in Paris. In 1954 he produced pottery. In 1956 he was awarded the Guggenheim National Prize. From 1962 to 1966 he spent the Summer in Cadaques, where he painted gouaches.
Corneille's early works were evocative paintings of landscapes with strong colours, these often show the influence of Picasso and Miro. He then began to use dark warm colours (mainly red, green and blue), he also started to shift his viewpoint painting landscapes from above with a ground plan effect. His work of the 70s often included bright colours on a pale ground. This work was more fluid in composition.
