Born in London he studied at Beckenham 1949-53, and the RCA 1955-58 following military service in Korea and Japan. In 1958 he won an RCA Major Travelling Scolarship to France and Italy. He was primarily a printmaker before he began to make large oil and acrylic compositions; he has won many international print prizes, including Bradford (1974 and 1982), Fredrikstad (1978), Tokyo (1979) and Jywalskyla, Finland (1981).
His first one man exhibition was at the AIA in 1963; his second at Annely Juda in 1970, where he has exhibited ever since. His work has been shown world-wide in many one man and group exhibitions, and is in many National Collections. He taught at Hornsey 1959-74, Leeds and Ravensbourne. His abstracts have simple rectangular formats, in which the density and texture of the paint establish luminous relationships of colour.
