British Painter and etcher of contemporary life; illustrator and animated cartoon film maker. Born in London, he attended the Slade School, the Central School under W.P.Robins, the Academie Julian, Paris, under Pierre Laurend and the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris, under C.A. Waltner. In 1924 he worked under Carlos Berger in Madrid and from 1924 to 1927 he travelled widely, forming a friendship with S W Hayter. From 1927 helived and worked in France, becoming a member of La Jeunne Gravure Contemporaire in 1931. He worked in England from 1939, visited the USA in 1953 and from 1955 worked in France and England. He exhibited at the RA from 1924 (and was made a RA in 1980), and showed in Paris from 1930. He held regualr solo exhibitions in London galleries indcluding the Leicester Galleries from 1934 and exhibited at the London Group (member in 1946). His work is in many public collections including the Tate Gallery. He taught at the Central School from 1948 to 1954, at the Slade from 1954 to 1976, and at the Minneapolis School of Art, USA in 1965. From 1941 to 1945 he was an official war artist and was awarded his CBE in 1982. His film work includes La Joie de Vivre, 1932-4, and amongst his book illustrations are those for Cocteau's Les Enfants Terribles, 1937. In 1970 he published Etvhing, Engraving and Intaglio Printing. His early painting reflects the style of Van Gogh, Soutine and Dunoyer de Segonzac and his etchings were also influenced by Segonzac as well as by Joseph hecht and Emile Laboureur. In later work his technique broadened and became more painterly and colourful. All his work is characterised by its livliness and, particularly in etching, by diversity of line, wealth of detail and vivacious movement.
