ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Jean DUBUFFET   1901-85
< WORKS

French painter and print maker. His works, imbued with the spirit of L'Art Brut, created an irrational, primitive world, and varied textural surfaces produced by experimenting with sand, cement, tar, lacquer, etc., gave to his work a supra-pictorial existence. In 1945 he exhibited scuptures which he called 'Little Statues of Precarious Life'. Made from ephemeral and cast-off materials such as newspaper, worn-out sponge and string. In the late 1960s Dubuffet became increasingly occupied with sculpture.
