John Hoyland   b. 1934

Born in Sheffield, John Hoyland studied at Sheffield College of Art from 1951-6, and the RA Schools between 1956-60. He has travelled widely in Europe and both North and South America, and has been Artist in Residence at the Studio School in New York and at the University, Melbourne, Australia in 1979. Influenced by Hans Hoffman and other New York contacts, his work is abstract, with vibrant blocks of colour poured, splattered, bruched and applied with a palette knife; he also make screenprints, monotypes and etchings. His first one-man show was at the Marlborough Gallery in 1964; he regularly exhibits at Waddington's, and had a major exhibition at the Whitechapel in 1967. He has taught in New York, at Chelsea, St Martin's, the RA Schools and the Slade.
