ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Peter Sedgley   b. 1930
< WORKS

British
Peter Sedgley acknowledges the constructivist tendencies of his work, but the main emphasis is on colour. Born in London, Sedgley studied Architecture at Brixton Technical School in London from 1944 - 46, working professionally in Architecture for a number of years. In 1959 he abandoned architecture for art and in the late 1960s began to experiment with Op art through large-scale paintings, with some influence from futurism and surrealism but more significantly, he took inspiration from Paul Klee in terms of his experimentation with colour and new media.

His first one man shows in 1965 were held at McRoberts and Tunnard Gallery, London and Howard Wise Gallery, New York followed by one man shows across the UK and Europe throughout the 1970s, 80s and up to the present day. In 1968 he founded the organisation Space Provision Artistic Cultural and Educational (SPACE) with Bridget Riley and the Art Information Registry (AIR).

Like Anthony Hill and Malcolm Hughes he was involved in the Salon Realities Nouvelles, Paris where he exhibited in 1965 and where the emphasis was on geometry in art. He has exhibited in significant group exhibitions including The Responsive Eye, Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1965 and very recently in the Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era at the Tate Liverpool in 2005.

He has works held in public collections including Tate, London; Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the Walker Art Centre, Minneapolis. He lives and works in Berlin and Sussex.
