Osborne Samuel is delighted to present this long overdue retrospective for George Dannatt on the occasion of his 90 birthday, marked appropriately with this, his first major London exhibition. George knew and worked amongst several of the leading St. Ives painters of the post war years, notably John Wells and Denis Mitchell. Over the years, he and his wife Ann have assembled a remarkable collection of works by his friends and contemporaries. This collection includes outstanding works by Robert Adams, Terry Frost, Roger Hilton John Tunnard and John Wells, some of which will be included in our exhibition.
As a painter, Dannatt is drawn principally to landscape, around which he fits his elegant geometries. Less often he deploys them in purely abstract canvases. He is technically versatile, making drawings, prints and constructions in addtion to his paintings. Dannatt’s paintings lie visibly within the legacy of St Ives.
