Keith Vaughan: Painting and Drawings
24 May - 23 June 2007

This exhibition of Keith Vaughan’s paintings and drawings comes at a high point for Modern British Art. Museums, galleries and collectors are giving more prominence to artists of the immediate post-war period and Keith Vaughan exemplifies this movement in his powerful canvases and works on paper.

This is the artist’s first London gallery show since 1990. The gallery has assembled an unprecedented collection of over 60 oils, works on paper and drawings, some generously lent by private collectors from around the world. Many of the works have not been seen on public display for many years. They provide a unique insight into the work of an artist who has maintained a position of profound respect amongst experts in the Modern British period.

Famous for his male nudes and landscape paintings, with the signature concentrated blue taking a principal place in his works of the ’60s and ’70s, Vaughan was a man of reserve, with a contemplative nature, who struggled with his sexuality and who died an early death in 1977. Counted amongst those of the Neo-Romantic movement, he is now recognised as one of Britain’s greatest artists of the post-war era.

There is an extensive 88 page catalogue being published to accompany the exhibition. It includes over 60 colour plates of the works on display in the exhibition as well as new texts and essays. The transcript of John Ball in conversation with Nicholas Goodison allows us to hear from two people who are leading experts on the work of Keith Vaughan. John Ball was also a close friend of the artist. Veronica Gosling’s personal recollections afford the reader a perceptive insight into the artist as a family friend. Art historian Andrew Lambirth has written a scholarly essay which adds immensely to our understanding of Vaughan’s art.
