Anthony Whishaw: Down Stream
17 October - 15 November 2007

Born in London in 1930 Anthony Whishaw studied at Chelsea College of Art between 1948 and 1952 afterwards winning a Royal College of Art Travelling Scholarship. His early work grew from an admiration for Picasso, the Cubists and especially Goya’s Black paintings. In the early 1980s a crucial turning point came with a series of works which attempted to reconcile opposing elements. As Whishaw explains: I became increasingly intrigued by paradox- visual irony- the combination of opposites ie; reality / illusion /allusion, abstraction /figuration, past / present, surface / depth, all contributing to the overall idea I wanted to produce,- an image in the process of making itself visible on the very edge of perception , an unique autonomous entity although related to or part of a series.

Osborne Samuel is delighted to be showing the work of this highly acclaimed artist who has had exhibitions throughout the world including Kettles Yard in 1982-83, two shows at the Royal Academy in 1986 and 1987 and his work was part of a major exhibition at the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham in 1988 'The Romantic Tradition in Contemporary British Painting' which toured France and Spain. He also has works in many public collections including Arts Council of Great Britain; the European Parliament, Strasbourg; the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia; Tate
Gallery and The Bank of Boston.
