CURRENT GALLERY EXHIBITION Modern and Contemporary Prints, 2008 5 May - 24 May 2008
Prints are an integral part of the activities of Osborne Samuel. We are long-standing members of the International Fine Print Dealers Association and exhibit every November at the annual IFPDA Print Fair in New York as well as the London Original Print Fair at the Royal Academy of Arts in April. It is the 23rd such fair held at this venue and this year we will be displaying recent acquisitions by European and American artists, both Modern and Contemporary prints, and for the first time we have introduced photography.
We have an outstanding collection of ‘Futurist’ British linocuts from the 1930s by the artists who attended Claude Flight’s classes in linocutting at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, including works by Andrews, Flight, Power and Tschudi. Gordon Samuel’s book about the Grosvenor School, ‘The Cutting Edge of Modernity’ is available from the gallery. International interest in these linocuts and Modernist British prints continues unabated with the opening in January this year of The Rhythms of Modern Life: British Prints 1914-1939 at the Museum of Fine Art Boston, USA until June and then at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York from mid- September to early December followed by The Wolfsonian in Miami in the autumn of 2009. The American exhibition includes works by CRW Nevinson and Edward Wadsworth, who are included in our catalogue.
We also include two outstanding works in linocut by the multi-faceted Edward Bawden, both of Brighton; portrait heads by Auerbach and Freud; large aquatints by Pasmore that are rarely exhibited and works by Heron (back cover), Hilton (front cover), Nicholson, Piper and Paolozzi.
Amongst the many highlights are three exceptionally rare and early works by Henry Moore, new prints by Antony Gormley, his first for sixteen years, a group of lithographs by Elizabeth Magill, ‘pigmented’ prints by Marc Quinn from his 2000 Garden series and William Kentridge’s monumental Sleeper - Red of 1997.
We look forward to seeing you at the London Original Print Fair at the Royal Academy from 23-27 April. Many of these prints will be exhibited at the fair, and all will be at the gallery in Bruton Street from April 30th onwards.
