Standing Figure by Peter Kinley

Standing Figure, 1961
Oil on Canvas
Signed lower left recto, also signed and titled on stretcher; artist's reference number 118/0514

In this large figure-within-an-interior composition Kinley emphatically posits the three primary colours - red, blue, and yellow - within dark brown and black surroundings. The fact these primaries describe likely canvases propped on easels or against studio walls contributes to the feeling that art itself is the real subject of this powerful composition and that the iconic central figure is that of the artist.
Whatever the case, Kinley again emulates de Stael’s impastoed structures. His developing teaching career, which saw him teach at St. Martins’ and Wimbledon Schools of Art, led to his becoming principal lecturer at Bath Academy of Art in 1975. Lifetime solo shows at MOMA, Oxford (1982) and Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge (1986) confirmed achieved status at a late stage, when his work had markedly changed from impasto to an ichnographically reduced, thinly painted, yet richly coloured manner indebted to Matisse and Diebenkorn.
