Sophie Ryder by Sophie Ryder

Sophie Ryder, 2001
Jonathan Benington
Hardback

This is the first book on British sculptor Sophie Ryder.

Ryder is a highly versatile artist who makes wire and bronze sculptures, installation, wire drawings, collages and prints. Her lively, often humorous insights into human and animal relations have brought her international acclaim. Larger than life, her minotaurs, lady-hares and dogmen are the stuff of daydreams and yet they retain a great sense of humanity expressed through movement, gesture and physical contact.

Jonathan Benington examines the inspiration behind the work, its unusual techniques, and its public reception. First-hand insights into studio practice interspersed with interview material and personal observations, make for a revealing account of the artist and her art.

The extensive series of photographs of work in progress taken by the artist's husband, Harry Scott, shares a similar insider's perspective. The result is a behind-the-scenes look at the creative processes of one of our most successful artists, which will appeal to art lovers and students alike.
