Oil by Nick Danziger

Oil, 2003
Photograph
150 kilometers out at sea this rig is drilling for oil. Angola is su-Saharan's second largest producer.

From the series 'Angola' - Until 2002, Angolans had been at war for more than five decades - first against the Portugese, then amoungst themselves after independence. Millions of Angolans fled to the capital with no thought other than to avoid the fighting. Arriving in Luanda the heat enveloped me like a barber's wet towl. Wealth and poverty live side by side. Children play in the smouldering refuse which is eventual;ly extinguished by the rains that turn the unmade streets into rivers the colour of milky coffee. During my stay the daily high points were my encounters with Angolans. Even though the peace contnues to hold, most to to bed filled with uncertainty. The most often repeated word: confuso (confusion) - all is not as it seems.
